Mike Scott

    After graduating from Lemoore Senior High School in Lemoore, California in 1978, Mike came to  Florida and began work at Winn Dixie in 1979.  About a year he changed jobs and went to work for the City of Vero Beach. At that time, the City of  Vero did not have a union. In 1982, Mike served on the "inhouse" organizing committee which organized the city and they got a contract in 1984.

    Mike continued his commitment to labor and became Chief Steward in 1984 until 1994, when he left the City of Vero Beach and went to work for Teamsters #769 as their Business Agent in the Vero Beach office.


   Mike's duties as Business Agent included organizing, negotiating and servicing contracts for both the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) as well as Public Employees Relations Commission (PERC). His area included Palm Beach north to Brevard County, servicing 11 separate agreements of both public and private sector groups. The contracts cover public employees, hotel service employees, construction workers, bread and cake route salesman, sanitation workers, hotel and restaurant supply distribution drivers,  registered nurses and other health care workers.

 

      In December of 2002 Mike was elected as Secretary-Treasurer of Local 769 and moved to the Miami office.

      In 1994 Mike was appointed as a delegate to the Palm Beach-Treasure Coast, AFL-CIO
labor council. From 1995 until 2003 Mike served as the North Vice President to the labor council. This position included being the Committee On Political Education ( C.O.P.E. ) Director, encompassing the area of Indian River, St. Lucie and Okeechobee Counties. In 2003 he was elected to serve as a Trustee to this labor body.

     Mike  was also a founding member of Coalition of Labor United for Excellence (CLUE) in Indian River County, Mike serves as a delegate to the Palm Coast, South Florida and Building and Construction Trades council; Mike served as an Executive Board member representing organized labor to the Jobs and Education Partnership (JEP) for the Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin and Okeechobee Counties. Mike has served as the State Committee for Indian River Democratic Executive Committee, the Chairman of the Indian River Democratic Executive Committee and on the Florida Democratic Executive Committee. Mike
is a registered lobbyist with the Florida AFL-CIO United Labor Lobby (ULL) and serves as a Vice-President on the Florida AFL-CIO Executive Board.

 

       In October 2003, with the retirement of Bob Belans, Mike was appointed to the position of President of Teamsters Local Union 769.
